The Green Sanctuary Program

As a way to start taking action, many congregations use the Green Sanctuary Program. This comprehensive program for congregational involvement was created and nurtured by UU Ministry for Earth until 2008, when the Green Sanctuary Program was given to the UUA to administer. We decided that our greater faith community would benefit from the higher visibility offered as a program of the UUA. However, UU Ministry for Earth continues to provide resources and to foster sharing of ideas, plans, and programs among all congregations striving to green their communities. For the application process and forms, see the UUA website at  http://www.uua.org/leaders/leaderslibrary/greensanctuary/index.shtml (or search for Green Sanctuary Program ) As of July 2008, Robin Nelson, the Program Manager for Congregational Stewardship Services, manages the Green Sanctuary Program. Please direct specific questions and comments about the program or your congregation's process to greensanctuary@uua.org

Need ideas for actions in the Environmental Justice section of your Green Sanctuary application? To help you get started, here is a spreadsheet of environmental justice projects from recent Green Sanctuary program applications. You may search/sort this data base by the following key words: Community Outreach, Energy Conservation, Environmental Advocacy, Ethical Eating, Habitat Restoration, Micro-financing, Mountain Top Removal, and Water Rights. It also includes links to congregational websites where you can find more information on the projects. The list was compiled by Emily Kao, winter 2010 Environmental Intern in the Advocacy & Witness Washington office, based on information provided by Robin Nelson, UUA Green Sanctuary program manager in the office of Congregational Stewardship Services.

UU Ministry for Earth will continue to support congregations: Search this site for topics or order publications and resources: see http://uuministryforearth.org/orderform.html.  For workshops, worship services, and programs, contact the UUMFE office office@uuministryforearth.org  For informal communication with other congregations, you can search Facebook for Ministry for Earth.
