Bill McKibben and his 350.org team orchestrated a wildly successful International Day of Climate action on October 24. Now UUs have another opportunity to join the world from December 11–13 in a weekend of climate action – “The World Wants a Real Deal” – during COP-15, the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. In partnership with tcktcktck and Global Climate Campaign, 350.org is organizing candlelight “Vigils for Survival” around the world on Friday, Dec. 11 or Saturday, Dec. 12. Go to 350.org to explore the vigil action pages, including Bill McKibben’s invitation to join the world in lighting candles of hope, guidance on hosting a vigil in your own community, and links to other participating organizations. On Sunday, Dec. 13, faith communities are once again invited to “sound out” the 350 call to action through ringing bells, beating drums, and making all kinds of noises 350 times. Register a “Sounds of 350” event in your community.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula in Newport News, VA is already planning a “Vigil for our Environmental Survival” at the city’s Town Center Park on Friday, Dec. 11. This dedicated congregation also participated in the Oct. 24 Day of Climate Action. Click here to see photos of all their activities leading up to Oct. 24, the day itself, and to watch a wonderful video of seventy-five members and supporters singing Rev. Fred Small’s 350 anthem.
If your congregation is planning a “Vigil for Survival” or a “Sounds of 350” event, please let UUMFE know by e-mailing a description to office@uuministryforearth.org. Photos of your activities would also be appreciated.
